Issue #10: Review of MMP

10 Points worth Special Attention

1)      The MuseumMile™ Plan (MMP) creates more jobs than the Regional Transportation Authority.   I realize this is a belief, and that this MMP belief, flies in direct competition to the belief that first we need to create a commuter rail system for this community to attract new jobs and employers.

2)      Perhaps the best way to view the MMP is as a “Marketing and Developmental Mousetrap.”  Maybe when the MuseumMile™ Governing Board has put the MuseumMile™ Plan solidly in place, a regional transportation system should be implemented, but for now, priority belongs on job creation and cultural fulfillment.

3)      The MuseumMile™ Governing Board has taxing authority for a MuseumMile™ Culture Tax patterned after the Denver model.  See www.scfd.org for more information.  In 2009 Paul Soglin and Dave Zweifel published opinion pieces for an “Arts and Entertainment tax”.

4)      You cannot do justice to both the MMP and the RTA at the same time.  Again, this is a belief.

5)      The MMP does advocate a MuseumMile™ Amtrak Station at Olin Terrace.  (Praise is given to Governor Doyle, Mayor Cieslewicz and the system for choosing a Madison station on Downtown’s MuseumMile.)

6) The MuseumMile™ Development Plan is easier to understand than the commuter rail issue.   Below are easy to understand museum potentials:

Museum Name

  • Wisconsin Native American MuseumTM
  • Wisconsin Indian Museum™
  • Earth Day MuseumTM
  • Madison Golf MuseumTM
  • National Onion MuseumTM
  • Madison Jewish MuseumTM
  • Wisconsin Women’s Museum™
  • Carousel ParkTM or Ferris Wheel Park™ (State Street Heritage Economy)
  • Wisconsin’s MuseumMileTM Camp
  • Madison Historical Museum
  • Cheap and easy branding projects of the Amtrak station and new library (Downtown’s MuseumMile™)
  • MuseMaxTM Theater
  • Trek Bicycle Museum of Wisconsin
  • 100 State Street location becomes a museum lease contest.
  • American MuseumTM (Old American Exchange Bank)
  • America’s Dairyland MuseumTM
  • Wisconsin Dairy Museum™
  • National Gay & Lesbian Museum™

7)      An Arts & Entertainment District is being built right now, but without the attractive brand name—Madison’s Museum Mile™.

8)      Wisconsin can effortlessly follow and co-create the evolution of “Main Street Programs” into Wisconsin MuseumMiles™. Wisconsin extends the classroom through museums and becomes the “MuseumMile™ State”.  Please remember the motive power behind the MuseumMile™ Camp Dream.

9) Using Tier levels for the feedback loop, the Overture Center for the Arts, the zoo, the new library and Olbrich Botanical Gardens would be funded out of Tier I of the MuseumMile™ Fund.

10)   This cultural tax alternative is ten cents on ten dollar sales in the support counties.
